Whatever it was that mankind lost in the Garden of Eden, it must have been something very important. It was something that defined our existence, an element without which we cannot truly be everything our Maker intended for us. It must have been an indispensable component of our being. Satan is not foolish. He is too cunning to steal something from us that would not have eternal significance or consequences. He took from humanity something without which we are already dead while living. The fall of mankind resulted in the loss of something far more valuable than the Garden of Eden itself. The loss of the Garden was just one of the consequences of that greater loss. But we now understand what mankind lost through what Jesus came to restore. "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." (John 10:10 NIV).
