Erecious seeks the place of Ferrigutt's Conscience, as he prepares for the Erron War. He succeeds and gains a place with the Grey Conclave, which seats once every fifteen years. But the assembly indicts him and orders his imprisonment at the Dark Den. Instead, the gods cage Erecious at the Fortress of Shadows at the hands of the nequeers. To end the Erron War, Erecious at the Fortress, whispers his message as "riddles in the shadows", that the gods may be robbed of their understanding. Threatened by this move, the gods send the dark beasts to slay the pure leritors and retrieve the whispered riddles. Can the gods retrieve the riddles, and understand their grey meaning? Can they understand the end of the war?
