Abstract
Purpose - The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) has significantly transformed the global knowledge landscape, compelling libraries to rethink their traditional roles in response to the emerging intelligent technologies and evolving user expectations. This paper examines the imperative of repositioning the library as an Intelligent Knowledge Ecosystem (IKE) to ensure its continued relevance and sustainability in the 4IR.
Design/Methodology/Approach - Drawing on a conceptual and analytical approach, the paper synthesizes existing literature to examine the historical evolution of libraries, the challenges confronting contemporary libraries, and the strategic dimensions required for their transformation.
Findings - It argues that libraries must shift from collection management to knowledge curation and creation, embrace phygital intelligent environments, function as research partners, provide personalized AI-driven knowledge services, and participate actively in global knowledge networks.
Practical implication - The paper further highlights the implications of this transformation for library professionals, institutions, policymakers, and Library and Information Science education.
Originality/Value - It concludes that libraries that strategically reposition themselves as Intelligent Knowledge Ecosystems will remain indispensable drivers of knowledge creation, innovation, and sustainable development, while those that fail to embrace this transformation risk progressive institutional irrelevance within the rapidly evolving Fourth Industrial Revolution.
