Abstract
Abstract This study examined the impact of digital technologies on the resources and services of public libraries, using Borno State Public Library, Maiduguri, as a case study. Specifically, the study investigated the level of awareness, extent of integration, perceived impact, and challenges associated with the use of digital technologies, as well as the influence of awareness on integration and challenges on library services. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were collected from 58 library staff using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, and regression analysis. The findings revealed a low level of awareness of digital technologies (cumulative mean = 1.82) and a correspondingly low level of integration (cumulative mean = 1.99). The impact of digital technologies on resources and services was moderate (cumulative mean = 1.97), while challenges of integration were high (cumulative mean = 3.2), including inadequate funding, poor internet access, and limited digital literacy. Regression results showed that awareness significantly influences the integration of digital technologies (β = 0.64, p < 0.05), while challenges significantly and negatively affect library resources and services (β = −0.60, p < 0.05). The study concludes that improving awareness and addressing infrastructural and skill-related barriers are essential for enhancing digital transformation in public libraries. It recommends increased investment in digital infrastructure, staff training, and awareness programmes to strengthen service delivery and ensure effective integration of digital technologies.
