EMERGING ROLES OF LIBRARIES AS CORE INSTITUTIONS FOR RESEARCH AND EDUCATION

Abstract

Promoting research and education has been a major concern that needs not be overlooked. This is also coupled with the continuous negligence of the library on the
side of many educational and research stakeholders. It is however right to assert that
the library stands at the heart of education and research through certain emerging
roles. To this end the paper focuses on emerging roles as core institutions for research
and education. In doing this, the study x-rayed the paradigm shift in the roles of
libraries towards research and education promotion. It further explored into the
emergent roles of libraries and librarians in promoting research and education as well
as revealing vital skills requiredofthe librarians to actively carry out these roles as
ways through which these emerging roles can be sustained. Having discovered all
these, the position of the paper lies on the conclusion that libraries as institutions
acquire process, organize, preserve materials, Provide reading and learning materials
to help argument lectures notes with the facts and ideas while also playing critical role
in ensuring the sustainability ofthe educational system, literacy level ofthe people
and research productivity. The paper recommends among other things, the need to
organize sensitization programmes aimed at providing researchers, educators, and
educational institutional policy makers with the understanding of the roles of the library
as avenue by which information is acquired and disseminated to the people.
