Abstract
This paper focuses on the appraisal of the legal framework for biodiversity protection in Nigeria, in light of challenges and possible solutions for its protection. This became imperative given the enormous economic and social importance of protecting biodiversity in Nigeria and worldwide. The study adopted a doctrinal approach to evaluate various legal frameworks connected thereto. Having analyzed various legal frameworks dealing with the protection of biodiversity, the challenges, possible solutions, and remedies it was discovered that, it is not how excellent and available the legal frameworks are or seem to be, but the political power of the government of the day towards the implementation process of such laws, conventions and treaties in line with the current changes of the society. Some major threats to biodiversity conservation in Nigeria include poverty, economic development, incomplete or non-implementation, and non-ratification of some international treaties and conventions on conservation issues, ambiguous governmental laws on biodiversity, climate change, pollution, and invasion by alien species. Possible remedies include concerted efforts to implement and ratify treaties and conventions on biodiversity, and educating the populace to forgo cultural practices that are inimical to the conservation of biological resources. The essence of this paper is to highlight and sensitise citizens on the importance of biodiversity protection in Nigeria.
