The Role of Gombe Line in Peace-Building and Socio-economic Development in Nigeria.

Abstract

Gombe State Government, over the years, has contributed to the socio-economic development of the North East region in particular and Nigeria in general. This paper examines the role of Gombe Line in peace-building through socioeconomic development of Gombe State and to know the successes as well as the challenges of the transport company. It is believed that through the provision of infrastructural facilities, a state could be peaceful and secured when the needs of the masses are addressed. The paper made use of qualitative design through the conduct of interviews for the purpose of data collection. It also made use of other sources such as published materials like books, newspapers, journals as well as internet. The findings revealed that, Gombe Line has created job opportunities for various groups of people from different socio-political, religious and ethnic backgrounds whom some are educated and some are not. Those that are educated are mostly employed as administrative staff who work in various Departments within the Gombe Line Transport Company. The findings also revealed that many people are employed as drivers who on daily bases drive from one location to another within the country carrying passengers from one state to another. Another dimension is that, through the Gombe Line Transport Company, the sector has generated revenue for the Gombe State Government.
