Abstract

This study presents the analysis of the impact of the Amnesty programme on militancy in the Niger Delta region. The objective of the study was to uncover the root causes of militancy in the region and analyse the impacts of amnesty in achieving sustainable peace. Qualitative method of data collection was used, which involved document analysis, archival library search, electronic and print documents, the use of published and unpublished articles and academic journals and were analysed using descriptive method of data analysis. The study is anchored on the relative deprivation theoretical framework of analysis. It revealed that the persistent injustice, inequality, marginalisation, environmental degradation and poverty gave rise to militancy in the region, exacerbating pipeline vandalism, destruction of valued assets, and hostage taking of oil workers, which has not only challenged the security of the Nigerian state but also threatened its revenue generation, development and sovereignty. The study concludes that Future efforts should focus on addressing the root causes of militancy through sustainable development initiatives, improved governance and genuine efforts to empower local communities and ensure environmental remediation.  Only through such a multi-faceted strategy can lasting peace and stability be achieved in the Niger Delta. It therefore recommends that reintegration programmes of ex-militants should be strengthened and made more comprehensive to promote initiatives that foster reconciliation and social cohesion between ex-militants and their communities, and also provide targeted support for vulnerable groups, including women and youth, who may have been disproportionately affected by the conflict.
