Abstract
The rule of law has been an important ideal in our political tradition for millennia (several thousands of years). It is impossible to grasp and evaluate modern understandings of it without fathoming the historical heritage. Indeed the concept of the rule of law has evolved from the ancient Greek Scholars, through Medieval Scholars till now. This paper appraises the historical background of the rule of law as well as the application of same in Nigeria. However, the paper highlights gaps in the application of the rule of law and provides recommendations to be adopted by stakeholders in the justice sector.
