Emerging Technologies: The Benefits to Nigerian Academic Libraries

Abstract

This essay explores the integration and adoption of emerging technologies in Nigerian academic libraries, focusing on five key technologies—Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning, Internet of Things (IoT), Blockchain, Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR), and Data Analytics and Data Mining. The paper examines the implementation challenges associated with these technologies, including infrastructure constraints, staff training needs, data security concerns, and the importance of collaboration. The paper highlights future trends in emerging technologies and discusses their potential benefits for Nigerian academic libraries, such as improved efficiency, enhanced user experiences, and increased research productivity. By embracing these technologies, Nigerian academic libraries can position themselves as leaders in the digital age, empowering users with the tools and resources they need to succeed. The paper concludes with a call to action for libraries to embrace a strategic and forward-thinking approach to technology adoption, leveraging the transformative potential of emerging technologies to create a brighter future for all.
