ASSESSMENT OF THE INFORMATION NEEDS AND SEEKING BEHAVIOR OF OANDO STAFF: A CASE STUDY OF OBIRIKOM/ OBIAFOR GAS PLANT IN OGBA/EGBEMA/NDONI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF RIVERS STATE

Abstract

This study investigated the assessment of the information needs and seeking behavior of Oando staff: A case study of the Obirikom/Obiafor Gas Plant. A descriptive survey design was adopted to elicit relevant data from 50 Oando staff members at the plant. A census sampling technique was used, as the study population was manageable. Data were collected using a self-structured 15-item questionnaire titled “Assessment of the Information Needs and Seeking Behavior of Oando Staff Questionnaire,” which was validated by field experts and recorded a Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient of 0.89. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics mean and standard deviation. Based on the findings, it was revealed that understanding the information needs and seeking behaviors of staff at the Obirikom/Obiafor Gas Plant is essential for improving operational efficiency and ensuring safety within the facility. Staff exhibited strong information needs related to real-time supply chain updates, competitor performance, and strategic decision-making. Internal communication systems, SCADA platforms, and ERP tools were identified as the main channels used to access needed information. However, gaps were noted in shift handover communication and the consistent use of digital platforms, which negatively impacted information flow and decision-making. The study recommended, among others, the implementation of an integrated digital platform that consolidates technical documents, safety protocols, and operational procedures to enhance accessibility and reduce information overload. It also recommended that; Oando provide continuous training for staff on information management practices and the use of digital tools, as well as develop a system for real-time notifications on operational and safety issues to ensure staff always have access to current information.
