CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES OF IMPLEMENTING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE(AI) AND MACHINE LEARNING IN NIGERIAN LIBRARIES

ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the challenges of implementing artificial intelligence in Nigerian libraries. One of the most exciting new directions in library computing is the use of artificial intelligence (AI). It entails teaching machines to carry out tasks that, if performed by humans, would be considered intelligent. The essence of AI research in libraries is to create computer systems or machines that can think, behave, and compete with human intellect, which will have profound effects on the profession of librarianship. Artificial intelligence is being used more and more in library settings. It is essential for a wide variety of uses, including indexing, cataloging, collection, development, circulation, and reference. Virtual reality for immersive learning, expert systems for reference services, robots that read books and organize bookshelves, etc. The use of AI in libraries may seem like it will replace librarians, but in reality, it will allow libraries to provide even more services to their patrons. It will help them provide better service to their customers. By enhancing library operations and services with AI, libraries will become more relevant in today's rapidly evolving digital society. The basic operations, administration, research, scholarship, service innovation, usability, retrieval, etc. of a library could all be influenced by AI. The study, therefore, recommends that libraries advocate for increased funding, adopt open-source AI tools, train staff in AI-related competencies, explore collaborative research opportunities, and educate stakeholders on the positive impact of AI. These measures will help libraries overcome implementation challenges and strategically position themselves for improved relevance and sustainability in the digital age.
