This study assessed the use of social media networking on the academic performance of undergraduate students in Nigeria using Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki as a case study. A descriptive survey research method was adopted for the study. The population consisted of 13,917 undergraduate students. Questionnaire was used for data collection. The study made use of Taro Yame’s formula to sample 389 students. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics for the 335 respondents' questionnaires that were recovered from the research, representing 86% response rate. The findings revealed that students of Ebonyi State University use many different social media networks, ranging from Facebook, WhatsApp, X, Instagram, Snap Chat and 2go, but majority of the students use Facebook and WhatsApp. The study also revealed that 43.28% of the respondents spent over 2 hours and above in a day on social media. The study revealed different purposes of using social media by students of Ebonyi State University, which include chatting, academic purposes, for pictures and videos, and sports and news. 46.28% respondents use social media for chatting. The study also revealed the positive and negative implications of using social media networking among undergraduate students of Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki. The study made some recommendations viz: the University Management should make a policy on the use of social media among students and that the academic advisers should counsel the students on regular basis on the possible implications of the use of social media in education.
