THE RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE OF NIGERIANS: A MARXIST PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

In this article we use historical, phenomenological and religio-sociological methods to discuss religious simony and the miracle powers of some Nigerian pastors. In Nigeria, self-acclaimed pastors use religion to deceive and exploit the masses and enrich themselves just like capitalists did in the time of Karl Marx. That is why Marx said that religion is the opium of the people. However, it is necessary to understand Karl Marx’s concept of religion in the context in which he wrote it and then use it to understand the behaviour of Nigerian shylock religious leaders who defraud the faithful. This disquisition yields insights and recommendations that enable scholars and the faithful alike to understand Nigerian pastors’ selfish goals.
