3-EXPORTS AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN NIGERIA

This paper investigated the relationship between export and economic growth in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation. The debate as to the relevance of the volume of export on the level of economic growth is still on-going. This paper examines this relationship for Nigeria using annual time series data for the period 1981-2016. The study utilises both the cointergration as well as the Granger causality test. The result obtained from the estimation show existence of conintergration relationship between export and economic growth for Nigeria. The Granger causality test however could not establish the presence of a causal relationship either from Exports to Economic growth or from economic growth to exports for Nigeria. This might be due to the narrow base of the economy. The researchers conclude that there is need to diversify the economy’s base to allow Nigeria take advantage of the theorized positive impact of export on economic growth.
