Abstract

The study adopted a descriptive survey research design because of the nature of the topic “Women’s participation in politics in Nigeria” problems and prospects. A study of Ikwo Local Government Area. A - 10 (ten) item researcher-developed questionnaire was used in the study. A sample population of five hundred (500) women of five out of nine communities in Ikwo Local Government Area was used in the study. The findings of the study revealed that low level of education (literacy), cultural barrier and inadequate political awareness amongst Ikwo women are a great inhibition to their participation in politics as opposed to their male counterparts. The study recommended for equal educational opportunities for Ikwo women with their male counterparts and that obnoxious cultural barriers inhibiting their full participation should be removed and finally, that full blown political awareness should be organised for them from time to time.
