Abstract

Infant mortality remains a significant public health concern globally particularly in developing countries like Nigeria especially in Ebonyi State. The study’s objective is to explore socioeconomic and health care determinants driving infant mortality in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study identifies major drivers and potential areas for solution to inform strategies for reducing infant mortality in  Ebonyi State; promotion of maternal and child health in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. The study examined mixed methods: secondary data analysis of existing surveys (NDHS) (Quantitative) and in-depth interviews with mothers, healthcare providers and community leaders (quantitative) approaches to explore socioeconomic and healthcare factors driving infant mortality in the state. It was found out that low socioeconomic and demographic factors caused infant mortality. The analysis of the study showed that poverty, low maternal education, inadequate antenatal care and limited access to skilled birth attendance are significant predictors of infant mortality. The study highlights the need for combined solutions addressing socioeconomic and healthcare determinants to reduce infant mortality. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made: engagement of community health workers to promote health education and provide basic care. And access to education and empowerment opportunity for the women to leverage their status. If these recommendations are implemented, Ebonyi State in particular and Nigeria in general can make significant progress in reducing infant mortality and achieving socioeconomic and healthcare development.
