Abstract

The study focuses on the online training and retraining needs of librarians for effective job
performance in academic libraries in Anambra State. The study was descriptive survey. Three
research questions guided the study. Twenty-three librarians in the three private universities in
Anambra State were the respondents for the study. A 20 item questionnaires designed based on
four points rating scales were used for data collection. The instrument was validated by the
researchers. The data collected were analyzed using mean to answer the research question. The
results of the study revealed that online training such as electronic communication competences,
Internet application competences, and webpage design competences are needed for effective work
performance among librarians in academic libraries in the universities. Recommendations were
that online training and retraining of librarians should be enhanced to provide for adequate online
competences for the demands of librarians work and for effective work performance in academic
libraries in universities.
