Abstract

The study examined computer mediated communication technologies and librarians’ interaction with users in government owned university libraries in Rivers State. A correlational research design was adopted, guided by four objectives, corresponding research questions, and null hypotheses. The population of the study comprised thirty-seven (37) librarians from three (3) university libraries. Due to the manageable size of the population, a census sampling technique was employed to include all respondents. A structured questionnaire based on a four-point Likert scale served as the primary instrument for data collection. Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation for the research questions, and the Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) for testing the hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed a significant relationship between the sub-variables of computer mediated communication technologies; specifically the use of Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, LinkedIn and librarians’ interaction with users for the provision of quality services. The study however advocates for active utilization of these digital communication platforms by librarians to achieve a seamless interaction with users, promote effective engagement, and expand a wide user reach in 21st century university libraries.
