Abstract

Telecommunication infrastructure is a key to accessing the Internet for commercial, social and educational activities. Studies revealed that access to the internet is limited to major city areas disregarding the rural areas in Nigeria. This perhaps is due to lack of adequate Information Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure that will cover every nooks and crannies in the country. The UN Sustainable Developments Goals 2015-2030, under Goal No. 9.c, enjoins countries, Nigerian inclusive to “significantly increase access to information communication technology…” In order to realize this goal, there is of course the need to construct more telecom masts in the country. This development is however seen as a threat to human health particularly where such constructions are made within the vicinity of residential areas. Hence, this paper raises some legal/health issues concerning construction of telecom masts in Nigeria. The paper uses doctrinal research methodology to address the issues raised herein. The paper reveals that legal and regulatory framework are necessary in harnessing the developmental activities in the ICT and related areas. The paper recommends the need to imbibe the culture of constructing wireless mast in order to eliminate the hazardous impacts of physical telecommunication masts in Nigeria. The paper also recommends that areas should be demarcated for Installation of telecommunication masts which should be far away from residential areas. This is to ensure minimal adverse effects on human life and property.
