ABSTRACT
Organisations with strong resolve for competitive advantage use knowledge sharing practices as mechanisms for improved performance and develop innovativeness of their personnel to achieve set goals. A review of literature showed that there was dearth of empirical studies about awareness and impact of knowledge sharing practices on competency development among police officers in Nigeria. Curbing sociopolitical and criminal activities could be enhanced by learning from the ingenuity of police officers who have had special professional trainings or have made landmarks in the society based on their experiences and tacit knowledge. This study, therefore, sought to investigate the awareness and impact of knowledge sharing practices on competency development among police officers in Kano State, Nigeria. The survey research design was adopted and questionnaire was the major instrument used for data collection. The data collected were analysed and presented in tables with summary. At the end of the study, findings revealed that police officers in Kano state were aware about knowledge sharing practices; although lack of time was a major factor militating against it; yet, knowledge sharing practices had impact on their competency development such as management of crime scenes. It was recommended that government should offer support systems for the Nigerian Police through provision of modern technologies and facilities that will facilitate knowledge sharing among police officers towards achieving sustainable peace while also building strong security institutions.
