INFLUENCE OF LIBRARY LOCATION AND FACILITIES ON TEACHERS’ UTILIZATION OF SCHOOL LIBRARIES IN FEDERAL GOVENMENT COLLEGES IN SOUTH-EAST NIGERIA

This study examined the influence of library location and facilities on teachers' utilization of school libraries in Federal Government Colleges in South-East Nigeria. The study examines two key factors location and facilities that affect teachers' engagement with school libraries. The design of the study was correlational research design. The population of this study was nine-hundred and thirty-four (934) teachers from the ten (10) Federal Government Colleges (FGC) in South East, Nigeria of which five (5) are Federal Government College and (5) Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC). The sample of this study was 280 teachers from the 10 Federal Government colleges in South-East, Nigeria, derived by the Taro Yamanne Mathematical estimation model. The instrument for data collection was a researcher’s developed two sets of structured questionnaires titled "School Library location and facilities Questionnaire (SLFQ)" and the "Teachers' Utilization of School Libraries Questionnaire (TUSLIQ)." These instruments were face and content validated by three research specialists. The internal consistency indices of the instruments were established using the Cronbach alpha statistic yielding reliability indices of .78 for FISHLIQ and .81 for TUSLIQ, respectively. Data collected from the respondents were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient to answer the research questions while the hypotheses were tested by comparing the p-values with alpha level of 0.05. Results indicate a significant positive correlation between the location of school libraries and teachers' utilization (r = 0.734, p < 0.05), with location explaining 54% of the variance in library usage. Furthermore, school library facilities were found to have a stronger positive relationship with teachers' utilization (r = 0.864, p < 0.05), accounting for 75% of the variance in usage patterns. The findings underline the importance of centrally located libraries and well-equipped facilities in promoting their effective use by teachers. The study recommends that policy makers and educational administrators prioritize the strategic location and adequate furnishing of school libraries to enhance their functionality and utilization, ultimately improving the teaching and learning experience in Federal Government Colleges.
