Exploring the Knowledge and Perception of Academic Librarians About Open Science for Effective Scholarly Communication in Universities in North West, Nigeria

Open Science is becoming a trending phenomenon among academics globally. This study explored the knowledge and perception of academic librarians in universities across North West Nigeria regarding Open Science and its potential to enhance scholarly communication. Three objectives were raised to; explore level of knowledge academic librarians in universities in North-West Nigeria have about Open Science practices; find out the perception of academic librarians in universities in North West, Nigeria about the adoption of Open Science for scholarly communication; and identify the strategies that can be employed to enhance knowledge and adoption of Open Science practices among academic librarians in universities in North-West Nigeria. The study adopted the qualitative research paradigm using the phenomenology research design. Population of the study consisted of academic librarians from the studied geo-political states. Purposive sampling technique was used for the selection of twenty-one academic librarians in the university libraries in the states covered by this study. Semi-structure interview guide was utilized as the instrument for data collection; and data collected were analyzed using thematic data analysis. Findings from the study revealed that academic Librarians in Universities in North West, Nigeria have limited awareness and passive exposure about open science, misconception; and not aware about the concept of open science. Findings on perception of academic librarians in universities in North West, Nigeria about the adoption of Open Science for scholarly communication revealed that ALs are reluctant to accept and ready to adopt. Strategies that can be employed to enhance knowledge and adoption of Open Science practices among academic librarians in universities in North-West Nigeria are capacity building and funding. Based on the findings of the study, it concluded that lack of knowledge and clarity poses a barrier to effective adoption and advocacy within academic institutions. Addressing these challenges requires targeted capacity-building initiatives, policy-driven sensitization programmes, and institutional support to enhance librarians' understanding and participation in Open Science. It recommended based on the findings that active engagement of academic librarians should be encouraged to reposition the misconception about open science to further promote knowledge and address perception of open science for scholarly communication. Capacity building and skills development should be designed for the academic librarians for the adoption of open practices coupled with the provision of steady funding.
