factors influencing the paradigm shift to librarianship in library schools in Rivers State

The study investigated the factors influencing the paradigm shift to librarianship in Rivers State. A descriptive research survey was used. The population of the study is 812 of undergraduate students in University of Port Harcourt and Rivers State University and Ignatius Ajuru University of Education from which a sample of 296 was drawn. Data were collected by means of a structured questionnaire designed by the researchers. The study was analysed using simple percentage. The findings show that the subject background of 1 IS students were Arts, Social Sciences and Sciences and met entry requirements for admission. The result also shows that the students would have applied for the course if they knew much about it however; they now like the course because it is now very interesting. The challenges faced include lack of awareness and unpopular nature of the course it was therefore recommended that LIS as a course be introduced in secondary schools to boost its awareness.
