This study assessed road freight transport operations in Tin Can Island Port using survey design method, the study used well-structured closed ended questionnaires to derive information from fleet managers, truck drivers, operators and freight forwarders within the four terminals namely Port and Cargo Handling Services, Tin Can Island Container Terminal Limited, five star logistics limited and Josepdam port limited. One hundred and one (101) copies of questionnaire were administered, data obtained were collated and analyzed. The study revealed that, there is poor accessibility to the terminals within the port as users rely only on existing dilapidated roads and barge services to move their goods to and from the port. Operational challenges encountered by truck drivers are extortion by security operatives and touts, bad roads and congestion. Effects of congestion on freight movement include increase in delivery time and fleet operation cost. The study further reveal accessibility and congestion have significant effect on efficient freight transport operations in the port. Practical recommendations were offered amongst which are prohibition of indiscriminate parking of trucks, allocation of funds for the rehabilitation of access road to the port and construction of ultra-modern truck terminals/parking bays and new carriage way to ease traffic flow.
