Undergraduate Student’s Awareness and Utilization of Online Databases in Federal University Lokoja Library, Kogi State

This study was carried out to examine the awareness and usage of online databases by undergraduate students in Federal University Lokoja. By adopting survey design, 132 final year students were randomly selected from a population of 710 final year students for 2018/2019 session and used for the study. A structured questionnaire was designed and used for collection of the data for the study, which were analysed using descriptive statistical tools. The findings of the study reveal that the undergraduate students in the institution studied have low awareness of most of the databases available in the university. Hence, this has greatly contributed to the poor utilization of the databases that are very relevant to the subject areas of the undergraduate students of the institution. However, the few databases utilized by these students were for the purpose of writing class assignment, term papers, research/project and updating their knowledge. The major challenges limiting the utilization of databases by students are lack of awareness, inadequate facilities, epileptic power supply and poor internet services. The study recommends intensify awareness concerning the availability of online databases by librarians and teaching faculties, listing of databases in the library and make them available to undergraduate students in both print and electronic copy and increase in budgetary allocations to the library for the acquisition of adequate facilities for enhancing database utilization.
