Career progression is a critical factor in professional development, particularly in academic institutions where structured promotion frameworks influence job satisfaction, motivation, and retention. This study examines the perception of practicing librarians in Èkìtì State towards the new career progression structure for academic librarians in Nigerian universities, as recently adopted in the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE). The study adopted a survey research design. A structured questionnaire was designed to elicit desired responses. The findings indicate a high level of awareness among librarians regarding the new career structure, suggesting that publicity efforts have been effective. Respondents generally perceived the new system as a welcome development that enhances their professional standing and eliminates career stagnation. The study also reveals that the new framework positively influences job satisfaction by allowing librarians to aspire to enhanced professorial positions, and thus increasing their relevance within academic institutions. Despite these positive perceptions, challenges such as administrative bottlenecks, research funding limitations, and the need for transparent promotion criteria remain paramount. The study recommends continuous awareness programs, standardized and fair promotion policies, increased research support, and regular evaluation of the career structure’s implementation. These measures will ensure the long-term success of the system and contribute to the professional growth of academic librarians in Nigerian universities.
