This paper investigated the weeding practices of library resources in university libraries with special attention to the situation in Ebonyi State University Liibrary. The specific objectives of the study are to; find out whether the Library has a weeding policy for the library resources; examine the criteria adopted in weeding library resources; find out the status of the weeded materials; identify the barriers faced in weeding library resources. The study employed a descriptive survey design. The population of the study was all the eight (8) professional librarians in Ebonyi State University Library. The survey used questionnaire and observation as instruments for data collection. The data collected was tabulated and analyzed using simple statistics of percentages and mean. The study revealed that the library has both written and unwritten weeding policies. They have mean values of 2.88 and 2.75 respectively which are above the cut-off point of 2.50 on a 4-point rating scale. The findings also showed that the University Library under study used physical condition of the books as the major criteria in weeding while changes in the demographics of the users is the least criteria used in weeding; that the library offers other libraries or other agencies in the University community the weeded books and also store them in the Technical Unit for historic purpises. The study revealed seven barriers to effective weeding with books might be needed by someone in the future as the major barrier. The study recommended that the the Library should strictly adhere to the weeding policy for effective weeding practices in the University; regular weeding schedule should be included in the policy to facilitate weeding by the Library; that the Library should set out measures to control weeding, and this should be included in the policy to avoid inappropriate and wrong weeding practices.
