Librarians’ Perceptions on Adoption of User-Generated Content on Social Media for Information Services in Public Tertiary Institutions in Katsina State, Nigeria

User-generated content (UGC) creation on social media is increasing worldwide. Various professional groups and individuals are now adopting social media to create and share contents and librarians should not be exempted. The purpose of this study is to examine librarians’ perceptions on adoption of user generated content on social media for information services. Guided by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the study examined the perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and attitudes of librarians towards adoption of social media for user generated content creation in thirteen (13) public tertiary institutions in Katsina State, Nigeria. Survey research design was adopted and self-administered questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data for the study and the population of the study consisted of one hundred and forty-one (141) Librarians in thirteen (13) public tertiary institutions in Katsina state. One hundred and six (106) librarians responded to the questionnaire. Three hypotheses were formulated and tested using inferential statistics. The study found out that there is a significant relationship between perceived ease of use of user generated content on social media for information services by librarians and perceived usefulness of user generated content on social media for information services by librarians. Also, the findings revealed that there is a significant relationship between librarians’ attitude and ease of use of user generated content on social media for information services. Similarly, the findings showed that there is a significant relationship between perceived usefulness and librarians’ attitude on adoption of user generated content on social media for information services as well as the use of user generated content on social media for information services by librarians. From these findings, it can be concluded that the three variables of: perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and attitudes are strong predictors of user generated content on social media use for information services by librarians. Even though, user generated content on social media for information services are not well adopted and used by librarians in public tertiary institutions in Katsina State, Nigeria, the findings of this study have provided hindsight and benchmark for future research that would look at this phenomenon from different context and study area.
