Impact of Electronic Health Records (Ehrs) on Quality of Patients’ Care in Turai Yar’adua Children and Maternity Clinic, Katsina, Nigeria

Most hospitals in Nigeria are still unable to provide accurate, up-to-date and complete information about their patients. This has been a major challenge in health care delivery, thus the need for this study to evaluate the impact of Electronic Health Records (EHR) on patient care quality and efficiency in Nigerian hospitals. With the global push towards digitization in healthcare, EHR systems have been identified as pivotal in enhancing patient data management, improving care delivery, and streamlining hospital operations. This research employed qualitative methods, and distributed self-developed questionnaire to 297 healthcare professionals. Findings indicate significant improvements in the accuracy and completeness of patient records, along with notable reductions in time required for data retrieval and documentation. Additionally, healthcare professionals report enhanced clinical decision-making and overall satisfaction with the EHR system, despite some challenges related to system usability and initial implementation barriers. These results underscore the potential of EHR systems to transform healthcare delivery in Nigeria, offering valuable lessons for other developing nations embarking on similar digital health initiatives.
