This study examined the sustainable transportation practices adopted by women in four (4)
urban centres in Ogun State, Nigeria. The study population is composed of women between
ages 15 – 65 years old who live in the four study sites of this study. A total of 1,597 respondents
were engaged to obtain detailed data on sustainable transportation practices based on
Cochran (1977) formula. The tools of inquiry are in-depth interview and structured
questionnaire. The collected data were analysed using descriptive statistics. The findings of
the research showed that public transport, motorbikes, tricycles and walking are the common
modes of transportation. Women have distinct sense of responsibility towards themselves and
their family, hence, embracing and utilizing other sustainable non-motorised transport modes
such as walking for short trips and making phone calls instead of making trips will help in
achieving environment-friendly transportation systems. The study recommended a significant
shift towards digital communication as a substitute for travel.
