ONLINE VISIBILITY OF RESEARCH OUTPUT OF ACADEMIC LIBRARIANS OF FEDERAL UNIVERSITIES IN SOUTH-SOUTH NIGERIA

Academic research investigation into online visibility translates to the appearance of an academic on the World Wide Web. The objective of this paper to explore the online visibility status of academic librarians in Federal Universities across the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Specifically, the paper intends to unveil academic librarians' discovery ability and online presence as well as accessibility of their research output. Using Google Scholar, data was sought from 104 academic librarians from the five Federal Universities in the South-South region of Nigeria Findings from the study indicate that academic librarians in federal Universities in the South-South zone of the country are visible in Google Scholar It further reveals that University Librarians and Professors in the zone are the most visible in Google Scholar The study also revealed that academic librarians research output in federal Universities in the South-South zone of Nigeria ranging from University Librarians to Assistant Librarians are visible as their research outputs are available in a search of Google Scholar database, albeit the numbers are not encouraging. The paper suggests inter alia, that academic librarians should publish in quality online indexed journals which make peer-reviewed scholarly works available online as this would support and facilitate the online presence and visibility of academic librarians across Federal Universities in the South-South region of Nigeria.
