Roles of Telecommunications Industry and the National Communications Commission, etc. in Suppression of Cybercrime and Terrorism in Nigeria

The advent of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has brought about enormous benefits to mankind. This revolution has restructured patterns of development all over the world from all sectorsof the economy. On the flipside of this paradigmshift are the negative developments that have come with them. With particular reference to Nigeria, some of these challenges include cybercrime and cyber-terrorism. While the menace of cybercrime has been a major cause for concern as it threatens the economic base and image of the Nigerian nation in the international community, terrorism has come to be the most disturbing security challenges bedeviling the country in recent times. Although the security agencies have played key roles as traditionally assigned to them in this regard, there is no gainsaying the important role of the telecommunications industry and National Communications Commission (NCC) in suppressingthe twin menaces of cybercrime and cyber-terrorism, including terrorism in Nigeria. This paper highlights the cardinal roles played by the stakeholders in the tackling the threats posed by cybercrime and terrorism in Nigeria.
