PASSENGER TRIP CHARACTERISTICS AS DETERMINANTS OF INTERCITY TRAIN PATRONAGE IN NIGERIA

The investigation into factors influencing transport mode patronage has been a recurring theme in research. While socio-economic and service quality aspects have received substantial attention, there's a noticeable gap regarding the impact of passenger trip characteristics on transport service patronage. This study delves into the influence of such characteristics on intercity railway service patronage in Nigeria. Data emanated from a structured questionnaire randomly administered to 1051 train passengers along the NRC Western line. The Multinomial Logistic Regression Model was used to analyse the acquired data. Insight from the results revealed that passenger luggage size increased very high train patronage by 2.4 times (p=0.031). Increasing the company of co-travellers reduced very high patronage by 0.64 (p=0.00). Long waiting times at bus stops raised the odds of Very high patronage by 2.23 times (p=0.051). Passenger trip purposes such as Official/Business (p=0.024) and Family Engagement (p=0.049) for both factors were found 3.8 times more likely to account for Very High train patronage compared to those on farming trips. The use of Economy Class tickets compared to sleeper coaches reduced Very high patronage by 0.22 (p=0.028). Passengers who use Mini-Bus as alternative travel to railways compared to those using their private cars are 1.92 times more likely to make Very High patronage of train service (p=0.043). Recommendations include policies to encourage group travel of passengers, Operators of mini-bus should be recognised as the most significant competition to intercity railway service in Nigeria.
