Knowledge Sharing and Use Among Law Library Personnel in Selected Universities in Nigeria

Purpose: The study sheds light on knowledge management practices prevalent among law library personnel in southern Nigeria.

Design: The survey design was adopted and through census sampling technique, 113 respondents were drawn. Information was elicited using a questionnaire with a Likert scale of five, four and two-points and criterion means of 3.50, 3.0 and 1.5 respectively.

Results: Knowledge types mostly shared were classification and cataloguing of legal texts (x=1.87, σ=0.34), and access to law case files (x=1.75, σ=0.43) especially for newly transferred personnel of non-legal background whilst the least shared were updates on legal reviews (x=1.28, σ=0.45) and information on library sponsorship (x=1.36, σ=0.48) which may be restricted to law library management staff. The shared knowledge is highly used (x=3.28, σ=1.47) but moderately shared (x=3.30, σ=1.40). The platforms mostly used for knowledge sharing include face-to-face (x=3.58, σ=1.35), seminar/conference (x=3.50, σ=1.23), social media (x=3.40, σ=1.31), peer-assist (x=3.23, σ=1.43), and coaching (x=3.33, σ=1.46) while others like communities of practice (x=2.81, σ=1.35), meeting/forums (x =2.48, σ=1.44) or Blogs/Wikis (x=2.82, σ=1.34) were insignificant in their relevance to knowledge sharing. The intervening variables to effective sharing and use ranged from trust, lack of motivation/recognition, age barrier, through conducive working environment to lack of proper human resource management.

Social Implication: The moderate extent of information sharing has negative impact on library staff ability to discharge his/her duties effectively especially for those with non-legal background, thus a greater extent will suffice and is been advocated for.

Conclusion: Knowledge sharing and use has high competitive advantage, hence, the parent institutions must be notified of the need for immediate intervention on making concerted efforts geared towards improving knowledge management practices. There must special focus on the constraints, and the building on human resource management skills of law library staff with no legal background.
