Influence of Social Media Platforms on Library Skill Acquisition and Academic Performance of Library and Information Science Students in Public Universities in South-South, Nigeria

The study examined the influence of social media platforms on library skill acquisition and academic performance of Library and Information Science students in public universities in South-South, Nigeria. Three research questions were answered while three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of probability. The study adopted descriptive survey research design using purposive and multistage sampling technique to sample 409 respondents, comprising 61 lecturers and 348 final year students of Library and Information Science. The instrument for data collection was a structured 32-item questionnaire. The instrument for data collection was validated by three experts. Cronbach Alpha reliability technique was used for ascertaining the reliability of the instrument which yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.93. Four hundred and nine (409) copies of the questionnaire were administered to the respondents out of which 388 copies were completed and retrieved representing 94.9% rate of return. Data collated were analysed using mean, standard deviation and t-test statistics. The results of the study showed that only Facebook, WhatsApp, wikipedia, Google and youtube are social media platforms that are well utilised for teaching and learning of Library and Information Science while others are not well utilised. The study equally identified 9 influences of the use of social media platforms on skill acquisition and 10 influences of social media platforms on academic performance of Library and Information Science students. The study among others therefore recommends improved use of social medial platforms to complement teaching and learning of Library and Information Science in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
