An Assessment on the Safety of Boat Services in Selected Communities in Lagos State

To attract more passengers and enhance the use of water transportation for efficient and reliable service, the safety of boat operation is crucial to overcome issues like overloading problems, mechanical problems and so many other issues facing the boat services. Thus, the aim of this study is to assess the safety of boat services in selected communities in Lagos state which are Ojo, Imude, and Badagry. The researcher adopted the qualitative and quantitative research design to explore the safety of boat services. The primary source for data collection was through the use of a close-ended questionnaire. A total of 140 respondents were interviewed to investigate their views regarding safety practices of boat services in each of the selected areas. The data collected were presented in tables, charts, graphs and analyzed using descriptive tools. The results showed that the knowledge of the respondents on safety levels for the boats was poor, which has affected the attitude of passengers towards the use of boat services. Future studies could incorporate improving the safety practices for boat operators in the Lagos metropolis. Hence, a need for adequate supervision of the agencies in charge of inland water transport (Lagos State Waterways Authority) on all operational jetties in Lagos.
